Fred Castilho

Fred Castilho, Master in Music by the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro, has been a professor and member of Monobloco since 2000. As a musician and teacher at Monobloco, along with this band, he had the opportunity to participate in shows, DVD recordings with national and international artists, as well as Jonh Secada, Gilberto Gil, Elba Ramalho, Lenine, Fernanda Abreu, Pepeu Gomes, Carlos Malta and Pife Muderno, Spok Frevo Orquestra, Blue Man Group, Fundo de Quintal, Fernando e Sorocaba, Preta Gil etc. and also teach classes in several countries, such as Japan, Indonesia, New Zealand, Denmark, England, Ireland and the United States. During this period he acted as a drummer in other works with artists such as Baden Powell, Gabriel Moura, Seu Jorge, Sérgio Loroza, Rita Benedito, Armando Lobo, Thiago Amud, Daniel Marques, UFRJazz etc. Com Armando Lobo and Daniel Marques, Fred founded the Orquestra Frevo Diabo, winner of the Brazilian Music Award, previously Prêmio Sharp created and idealized by José Maurício Machline, in the category of best regional group in 2010. In 1997, he joined the Farofa Carioca group, integrating its first formation where he met Seu Jorge and Gabriel Moura. Then he was part of the base band of the great master Baden Powell in his last shows, where he was part of the Quartet Cai Dentro, with his son and pianist, Philippe Baden Powell. Fred started his drumming studies in 1985, at the age of 16. Self-taught, as well as his father, the drummer Roberto Pontes Dias who took Bossa Nova to the world at the famous Carnegie Hall concert in 1962 and at that time was part of the Oscar Castro Neves Quartet, he started playing in school soirées and nightclubs. Fred also took some free courses at Pro Arte, where he took classes with Pascoal Meirelles and Edgard Rocca (Bituca) and continued pursuing his learning. In 1993 he moved to the United States to improve his studies. For several years he lived between San Diego and Los Angeles where he met and attended courses, classes and workshops with professors from well-known music schools such as MIT¹, as well as Dave Weckl, Peter Erskine, Phil Maturano, Ron Caruso etc. Back in Brazil, he also had the opportunity to take classes with the legendary Gary Chaffe.
